Starch Recovery Units
In the potato processing industry, the appearance of starch in the process water has negative side-effects. Starch shortens the life of the process equipment such as cutter-knives and pumps, the process water needs to be refreshed frequently. At the same time (biological) waste water treatment plants get overloaded. By continuous removal the starch at source, the side-effects are minimized. For this purpose NIVOBA has developed a compact recovery system that can easily be installed in (existing) potato processing lines.

Process description

Process Water is fed to a drumsieve. In this sieve coars parts such as nubbins and peels are removed. Subsequently the water is pumped into hydrocyclones where the starch is separated. The overflow from the hydrocyclones, almost free of starch, returns in to the process.

The concentrated starch is discharged into dewatering containers, big bags or a dewatering vacuum filter. The reclaimed starch is valuable material and can be used for further processing.

Design

A standard recovery unit is supplied as turnkey unit mainly consisting of the following components:
  • Drumsieve
  • Hydrocyclone unit HC-50
  • Rotating vacuum filter
  • Screw conveyor
  • Electrical cabinet
  • Intermediate pumps
  • Instrumentation
  • Accessories

The components are assembled on a stainless steel base plate.
